Under California law, "domestic violence" does not refer to a crime, but is a classification added to another crime. When domestic violence (DV) is attached to a charge of assault, battery, malicious destruction of property, or another offense, the charge is handled differently than it would be otherwise.

• The police and district attorney are required to pursue the case, even if your accuser retracts the accusation.
• Bail is set high: $25,000 to $50,000.
• A restraining order/protection order will be issued that may prevent you from going to your home, seeing your children, or contacting your spouse/partner.
