Domestic Violence Charges in California

Under California law, "domestic violence" is not a specific crime. It is a classification added to an additional crime. When domestic violence is attached to a charge of assault, battery, another offense the charge is handled differently than it would be otherwise.

Bail for a crime committed in combination with domestic violence is high, typically ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. Even if the alleged victim drops their accusations, law enforcement and the district attorney are required to pursue the case. Beyond possible incarceration and fines, a protection order may be issued preventing you from going to your home, seeing your children, or contacting your spouse/partner.
